Rumors Proliferating Regarding List of Banned Countries

By:  Santiago J. Padilla, Esq.

Over the last several hours, calls have been coming into our offices here in Coral Gables asking whether or not more countries will be added to the list of banned countries by the Trump Administration. As many of you know, on January 27, 2017, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled "Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States," which suspends the entry into the United States of persons from the following countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Over the last few days, we have heard rumors that more countries would be added to the list, like Venezuela and Colombia. However, yesterday, the U.S. Department of State ("DOS"), in an effort to quell the rumors, issued a communication stating in no uncertain terms that the travel ban will not be expanded to other countries. Specifically, the U.S. DOS stated that there is no plan on including Venezuela or Colombia to the list of banned countries.
